Home gym flooring ideas: What are the different types of flooring for home gym use?
If youâre as confused as I was about the sheer amount of home gym floor ideas, use the detailed information on the materials below to help you.
In terms of styles, these are your floor padding for home gym options:
- Interlocking: Small tiles that either clip or slot together. Perfect for a custom fit since theyâre usually easy to trim. These are the most common and popular.
- Single piece mat: These come as one larger piece, which you can either roll up and store or leave in situâthink horse stall mats. Not as popular but definitely have their place.
But, what are gym floors made of?
These are the main materials that should help you refine your workout room flooring ideas:
- EVA foam
- Foam
- Rubber
- Artificial turf
- Carpet
- Wood
- Vinyl
- Laminate
While all the above are viable floor mats for gym equipment, some are most definitely better than others, as youâre about to find out.
Which is the best gym floor material to use?

Yep, there are endless home gym flooring options, but the below information should help reduce your options.
For me, EVA foam, foam and rubber are the best choices. Iâve used all three!
EVA foam (the best mats for home gym, in my opinion!)
Itâs no coincidence that my top two recommended home gym floors are made from EVA foam.
But, it was hard to decide on foam vs rubber gym flooring as to which is the top dog, but EVA foam slightly wins for me in terms of comfort underfoot.
It strikes the best balance between the main features of home workout flooring:
- Cushioning
- Stability
- Durability
Itâs also waterproof, trumping regular foam, which isnât waterproof without being treated.
One thing to be aware of with foam flooring is that your weights can leave dents if allowed to rest on the tiles for too long. Obviously, the heavier the weight, the bigger the dent.
To counter this, simply rerack your weights when youâre done (which you should be doing anyway, right!!!)
If youâre set on EVA foam flooring for a home gym, which is an excellent choice, I recommend you check out the BalanceFrom EVA Foam Interlocking Tiles.
Foam
There actually isnât a lot between EVA foam and foam, with the latter tending to include polyethylene.
The biggest difference here is that regular foam isnât waterproof as standard, so the flooring needs to be treated for it to resist spills.
Itâs actually hard to notice the difference, quite honestly, so it might boil down to a simple case of affordability.
Even so, foam is an excellent choice for working out at home. For this category, I recommend the AmazonBasics Foam Interlocking Floor Mat Tiles.
Rubber
If you want maximum durability, rubber is the way to goâthereâs no doubt about it. Itâs the ideal flooring for a home gym if you want to drop your barbell without worrying about damaging the floor.
Depending on the quality, you still get a high level of cushioning, and some rubber tiles donât even need a backing to grip the floor.
In addition, most rubber flooring is waterproof, so feel free to pour water over your head during your workout đ
My top recommendation for rubber gym floor options is the IncStores Thick Premium Rubber Floor Mat. Simply roll this horse stall mat out and work your magic.
Artificial grass/turf
While you can, in theory, use foam or rubber flooring outside, artificial turf is the best option if you want a home workout setup outside.
It strikes a great balance between blending into your outside area while being pet and child-friendly. In addition, this option is weatherproof, come rain or shine, so there are no issues with leaving it out in the rain or worrying about it fading in the sun.
For me, the Goasis Lawn Artificial Grass Turf Lawn is the pick of the artificial grass gym weight mats.
Carpet
Carpet gym floors for home can work well if you want something that blends into your home decor better than foam or rubber.
While they lack the cushioning of the above options, thereâs still enough cushioning to not feel like youâre exercising on concrete.
On top of this, they also add a level of soundproofing and are easily cut to fit your space at home.
Right now, the House, Home and More Indoor & Outdoor Carpet is the pick of the bunch.
Wood
You might be surprised to think wood home gym floors are an option, but wood, if treated correctly, can be incredibly durable. It can also look amazing at home in your workout space.
While I wouldnât say itâs the best choice for dropping weights on, itâs very much a good choice for cardio, yoga, HIIT and dancing. In particular, boxercise and salsacise workouts are excellently suited to wood flooring.
Go for the IncStores â -Inch-Thick Practice Dance Floor Tiles for a wood flooring option.
Laminate
Sticking with the wood theme, laminate flooring is something to consider, but from personal experience, I recommend you avoid it.
While itâs a more affordable solution to the solid wood flooring above, itâs more susceptible to breaking, cracking and scratches.Â
With this in mind, itâs most definitely not suitable for dropping weights on but is still a residential gym flooring option for more cardio-based exercise.
If you really want to check out laminate exercise room flooring ideas, take a look at the Formica Prestige Walnut Laminate Sheets.
Vinyl
As the final material worth checking out, vinyl is much less user-friendly, especially when compared to interlocking tiles made of foam and rubber.
As such, vinyl flooring for a gym is a more permanent fixture at home. Once itâs cut to your gym area, you canât really move it elsewhere. This is both due to the adhesive backing and the shape youâve cut it to.
Also be aware that vinyl flooring can mark, dent, and cut quite easily. Depending on the flooring underneath, the dents might not come out.
The good news about vinyl flooring though is that itâs water-resistant and provides a decent grip for working out.
While I advise against using vinyl for in-home gym flooring, the pick of the options is the G-Floor 8â6âłx22ⲠLevant Garage Floor Mat in Slate Gray.
What is the best home gym flooring? Hereâs our top 16 list:
So, what is the best flooring for a home gym? I cover all the best options for the most popular types of home gym flooring below: EVA foam, foam, rubber, artificial grass, carpet, wood, laminate and vinyl. You should find an option to suit your individual needs.
1. BalanceFrom EVA Foam Interlocking Tiles (best home gym flooring overall)
What are the two main things you want or need from the best floor for home gym?
Durability and slip-resistance.
The BalanceFrom EVA foam interlocking tiles have durability and slip-resistance in spades, making it the very best foam flooring for home gyms you can buy right now.
The durability comes from the EVA foam, which doubles up as adding maximum comfort and sponginessâperfect for countering hard flooring in your home. While the high level of softness is great for cushioning, expect your bench or weights to leave impressions on the foam if left for too long.
Some interlocking gym flooring compromises slip resistance for durability, but not this option. The tiles are slip-resistant on both sides.
Not only does this ensure the tiles wonât move on the ground when youâre working out, but your sneakers will grip the surface much better, creating extra safety.
Something to keep an eye out for is the use of phthalates in increasing plastic gym flooring durability. The good news is that these EVA foam (EVA is a plastic) tiles donât contain any phthalates, which have been shown to be toxic.
Youâll also have this flooring up in no time since itâs simple to assemble. Customers dig how easy it is to put the interlocking tiles together and take them apart. This makes them so simple to clean, with them just needing a wipe-down with detergent and warm water.
Also, I love that neighbors wonât be hammering on your door, complaining about the noise from you dropping your barbell in your deadlifts. Some customers rave about how sound-proof they are, and they actually use them as soundproofing for music studios and for gaming.
Note that if youâre a powerlifter and are expecting to drop your bar, just be aware that such soft flooring can take some getting used to. They can create a slightly uneven footing, so you might be better off with a more rigid material, such as a horse stall mat (see below for an option on this).
Finally, these EVA foam mats provide excellent value for money, with options covering from 24 square feet up to 72 square feet. They really are the best interlocking gym mats you can buy.
Pros
- Excellent durability
- Double-sided slip-resistance
- Maximum comfort EVA foam
- Easy to maintain
Cons
- Expect your weights/equipment to indent the material
- Not ideal for powerlifters
- Protective workout flooring: Durable, non-skid textured tiles protect floors while creating a comfortable workout space
2. ProsourceFit ½â EVA Foam Interlocking Tiles (best flooring for basement gym)
Itâs hard to choose between this ProsourceFit product and the BalanceFrom one above. They have very similar features and both are excellent basement gym flooring options, thanks to their durability and soft cushioning.
Quality is paramount with this luxury gym flooringâthe foam doesnât crumble, which is often the case with inferior & cheap products. This makes them well-suited to lateral movement as well as weight use. If youâre a fan of burpees and mountain climbers (Iâm not!) then youâre good to go!
If you have hardwood flooring in your home, these work well in combination to produce extra cushioning and soundproofing. Just be careful if your hard flooring has a gloss/slippery finish since these gym mats might slip more than usual.
In comparison, theyâre better suited for use on concrete, making them an excellent option if you are looking for basement gym flooring ideas.
Also, these are very easy to clean. Some customers are happy with using a household broom after use each day. If thereâs heavier soiling, just simply use household detergent and water.
While some customers mention that these tiles come apart quite easily, this issue is easily resolved with some Gorilla Tape. Most consider this a small inconvenience and only an issue with seriously heavy use rather than from bodyweight exercises and yoga.
Pros
- Foam doesnât crumble
- Simple to clean
- High-quality cushioning and sound-proofing
- Ideal for basement gym flooring options
Cons
- Could slip on hard flooring
- Can disconnect without tape
- PROTECTIVE WORKOUT FLOORING - Durable, non-skid textured tiles protect floors while creating a comfortable workout space
3. AmazonBasics Foam Interlocking Floor Mat Tiles
Sticking with the foam theme, these AmazonBasics gym floor mat tiles are praised for their cushioning, offering that extra essential layer between your feet/shoes and your usual flooring.
Theyâre also a great option to fit different-sized roomsâsimple to cut and trim to fit as needed. In comparison to other interlocking tiles, these donât have a straight edge, so you arenât limited to which pieces go where. Any tile and can fit with any other tile!
If you have close neighbors, these foam gym mats are great to dampen out some sound. Even though traditional carpets do offer a level of sound insulation, these gym floor mat tiles take it to another level.
Note that these arenât a good option if you have pets, with some customers reporting adverse side effects when ingested.
While these are more affordable options compared to the BalanceForm and ProsourceFit options above, durability isnât compromised. This makes them excellent value for money.
With that said, be aware that some customers report their tiles pull apart easily.
Pros
- Excellent value for money
- High level of sound dampening
- Decent cushioning and durability
Cons
- Not ideal if pets in the home
- Can come apart easily
- Foam floor mat tiles help optimize any workout space; ideal for home, gym, or a kids playroom
4. ProsourceFit Extra Thick Puzzle Exercise Mat
YepâŚ
Thereâs a reason why weâve included two ProsourceFit gym flooring in this list. Apart from both being excellent high-quality flooring for gyms, this version is much thicker than the model above.
This one is either žâ or 1â thick, making it an excellent option if you need more protection between your workout and your flooring at home. Itâs ideal if you donât want the flooring to be a permanent fixtureâthink flooring to go over your lounge carpet.
As youâd expect, the tiles stay together really well, no matter your workoutâs intensity, making them ideal if your workout has more movement, such as with HIIT.
The added thickness should also give you more peace of mind when dropping the barbell or dumbbells; thereâs absolutely ZERO chance of that weight transferring through to your flooring underneath.
Keep in mind that some customers received the ½â-thick product as opposed to the žâ or 1â. This isnât a product quality or manufacturer issue but more a distributor problem, which is why we only recommend you shop through a company youâve heard of and trust.
Pros
- Excellent thickness
- Tiles fit together really well
- Ideal for child play as well as exercise
Cons
- Customer have received the smaller thickness in error
- PROTECTIVE, PORTABLE FLOORING - Dense, durable tiles protect floors and withstand gym equipment and heavy use
5. IncStores Thick Premium Rubber Floor Mat (great horse stall mats for home gym)
These IncStores mats are high-quality horse mats for gym use.
Have stables and need a large and cushioning gym mat? Why not grab more than one? At 41 x 71 x 0.51 inches and with different styles on offer, theyâre an excellent choice.
Bringing high-quality grip and shock absorbance thanks to the premium rubber, they do an excellent job at supporting you as you work out.
In addition, theyâre non-porous, so wonât soak up your sweat, spilled water, Gatorade, or horse⌠âstuffâ.
Thereâs no need to worry about damaging your flooring underneath with these mats, either. Customers specifically mention how amazing they are under Peloton treadmills and other heavy weightlifting gear.
One thing to be aware of, though, is that they do come with a natural rubber smell. But, this doesnât last long, and itâs worth airing them outside before use.
As with many gym flooring mats and tiles, customers report that they can arrive in the incorrect size, but this has been quickly rectified by the supplier.
Pros
- Dual horse stall and gym use
- High-quality rubber
- Non-porous
- Large size
Cons
- Natural rubber smell, but this reduces in time
- Product has arrived in the incorrect size in a small number of cases
- ADVANCED ACTIVITY ANYWHERE: Take on tough tasks with Premium rubber workout mats for home gym equipment and more, featuring recycled vulcanized tire rubber and a 4 tasteful colors made to withstand extreme exercise and occupations, indoors and out.
6. Goasis Lawn Artificial Grass Turf Lawn (best outdoor home gym flooring)
This Goasis artificial grass/turf carpet is ideal if youâre planning on working outdoors a lot, OR if you want to bring the outdoors into your home.
It has a high density and the âgrassâ is 0.4â high, making it feel awesome and comfortable under your feet.
Since this is the best outdoor home gym flooring, youâll be pleased to know itâs UV-resistant, so it wonât fade or wear due to sun exposure (and, no⌠you donât need to apply sunscreen, obvs!)
Added to this, this turf option is highly durable, which is essential for any outdoor flooring. This is perfect for those outdoor workouts, but doubles up as an excellent option for kids and pets, too.
Many happy customers mention how itâs not just great for exercise outside but also for dogs. This is especially the case since itâs non-toxic and lead-free, which is an essential factor when looking for outdoor gym flooring.
Be aware that some customers comment on how it doesnât look like grass when you get down and close to it. While thatâs understandable when shopping to replace regular turf, itâs not an issue for gym flooring.
Pros
- High-density and comfortable
- UV-resistant
- Lead and toxic-free
- Great for kids and pets
Cons
- Doesnât resemble real grass when up-close
7. GOLDEN MOON Self-draining Artificial Grass Mat
Who knew that artificial grass was so popular?
While most homeowners buy this Golden Moon artificial grass for their kids and pets, it doubles up really well for working out outside.
At 1.5 inches high, the pile provides more cushioning than the Goasis option above. Customers particularly mention how soft and comfortable it is underfoot, so itâs perfect for barefoot exercise outside.Â
Expect it to last a good few years, no matter the weather variability. One customer mentions how theirs has survived all weather extremes over the years, without durability or comfort reducing and without fading.
It also looks lush, making it blend in well with the outdoor spaceâdoesnât look too green, giving it a nice level of authenticity. Customers specifically like blade color variation and comment on how their neighbors couldnât tell it wasnât real grass.
If youâre in a wildfire zone or if there are open flames nearby, thereâs no need to worry since itâs flame-retardant so wonât contribute to spreading fires.
To boot, itâs really low maintenance. Simply brush and wash it down if used outside and use your regular indoor cleaner if itâs in your home. It self-drains thanks to small holes underneath, so all the hassle of drying is removed.
While this artificial option does seem amazing, be prepared to empty your bank balance a bit more than the rest. Purchasers also highlight that their dogs and cats have damaged their claws on the mats, with the blades also coming out too easily.
Pros:
- Tall pile at 1.5 inches
- Soft and comfortable underfoot
- Excellent durability
- Authentic look
Cons:
- Not a great option if you have pets, especially puppies
- A hefty price tag in comparison to the competition
- You will receive 6 pieces of 1x1 interlocking grass deck tiles, total 6 sq ft. Grass info: 1.5 inch pile height, looks like real grass! Back info: PP with lock-in system.
8. House, Home and More Indoor & Outdoor Carpet (best carpet flooring for gym)
I always find the concept of carpet gym flooring a bit of a strange one, I wonât lie!
But hey, this option from House, Home and More is definitely worth looking at if you want carpet flooring for your gym at home.
One of the biggest pluses is how hard-wearing it is, which is thanks to polyester fibers. This feature is standard for most carpets but also means itâs stain-resistant and super easy to clean.
And, no matter if you want your gym indoors or out, itâs weather and fade-resistant due to the UV protection. Customers particularly love it on a balcony for this reasonâexposed to the sun, wind and rain with added foot traffic.
On top of this, itâs very simple to cleanâyou simply pick up the pieces and hose them down or brush them with a broom while in place.
Despite it being weather-resistant, be aware that customers comment on how it absorbs moisture too much. This isnât a problem if you use it indoors since sweat and the odd spilled drink wonât cause an issue.
But, if youâre dead-set on an outdoor option, consider the Goasis Artificial Grass from above or the BalanceFrom EVA foam flooring, which is our top product.
In terms of comfort, it doesnât really compare to the rubber/foam options, which is mainly due to the fibers and Âź-of-an-inch thickness. Despite this, it has decent traction due to the ribbed texture, coupled with the rubber backing for gripping the floor.
One frustrating thing with this specific product is that it can come in other colors than pure grayâpurply-blue and-bluish gray have been reported as opposed to the advertised product. This is a rare occurrence though!
Pros:
- Hard-wearing option
- Very easy to fit
- Decent traction
- Simple to clean
Cons:
- Absorbs too much moisture
- Can arrive in a different color in isolated incidents
- Indoor Outdoor Carpet - great for your patio, deck, boat, sunroom and more
9. IncStores 1/4âł Thick Tough Rubber Flooring Roll (best rolled rubber gym flooring)
Sometimes, thereâs nothing quite like working out on a rubber exercise floor, and this IncStores rolled mat is the best rubber floor for a home gym (mat) in my eyes. There are much more expensive options out there that do the same job!
The main reason for this is how high-quality the rubber is. Itâs exceptionally durable, which is largely due to the inherent properties that rubber brings to the table. Itâs also really heavy, which isnât great for moving it around but is perfect for not shifting while youâre working out.
But, the Âźâ thickness provides excellent cushioning between you and your OG flooring at home. No matter your flooring, this rubber mat will workâgarage, lounge, bedroom⌠you name it.
Although many customers find the standard size of 4â by 10â enough for their space, itâs easily trimmable to fit your needs. They also love how simple it rolls out. The edges can curl for a bit but just need flattening once.
Just keep an eye on how much you sweat on the mat. Itâs porous so will absorb moisture. A simple wipe after working out is enough to keep it well-maintained and stop it from smelling like a gym, though.
Customers report quite a strong rubber smell when they first roll it out, which fades after a couple of weeks or so. If paint fumes usually get the best of you, watch out for this!
Also, keep in mind that there are different styles on offer. The pure black option can show flecks of dust and grime, so grab a flecked version if you want it to look squeaky clean (ish) 24/7.
Pros:
- Excellent quality
- Large size but easily trimmed
- High level of cushioning
- Affordable option
Cons:
- Rubber-like smell, but this usually fades within a month
- Shows dirt easily, which is mitigated by a different version
- TOUGHER IN NO TIME: Take any room up a notch with low-profile rolled rubber flooring for garage floors and more, featuring commercial-grade recycled rubber and a huge selection of colors made to withstand your homes serious spaces indoors and out.
10. Rubber-Cal Shark Tooth Heavy Duty Mat (best rubber gym flooring tiles)
If youâve decided on rubber but donât want the heftiness of the horse stall mat above, this interlocking mat is the next best rubber flooring for a home gym in our eyes.
It offers all the quality and cushioning of the horse stall option but in a more customizable interlocking mat structure.
Made from recycled tire rubber, itâs an excellent option to protect your flooring at home, no matter the location. Most customers tend to use it in their garage or basement, where harder flooring is more common.
The natural properties of the tire rubber shine through, according to customers, with excellent durability, high weather resistance (UV and ozone), and anti-fatigue and anti-slip.
All-in, this is a great option for any kind of home gym workout, especially for the powerlifters out there.
Just keep in mind that it does have a slight rubber odorâjust give it some time outside first to reduce this.
Pros:
- Popular alternative to rubber horse stall mats
- High-quality recycled tire rubber
- Easy to customize the size
- Ideal for all home flooring protection
Cons:
- Slight rubber odor, but this is easily minimized
- Heavy duty mats with high contents of EPDM resists UV/ozone; perfect for protective flooring for outdoor or indoor spaces
11. Yes4All Wood Grain Floor Mats (foam, but a good wood-effect option)
These foam wood-effect floor mats are an ideal compromise between the look of wood flooring and a more lightweight and cost-efficient option.
Customers love the insulation and shock-absorbance these interlocking gym floor mats bring, making them ideal for use in cooler areas of the house, such as the garage or basement.
Theyâre also non-skid, so are worth considering for HIIT workouts and provide a strong base under your feet for lifting. This couples well with the excellent soft feeling and cushioning.
Customers particularly like how easy the mats are to put together, commenting on how you canât notice the connecting lines. Due to this, they make a good permanent fixture in your home.
In addition, the manufacturer claims it only takes 5 minutes to put the pieces together⌠luckily for you, customers back this strong statement up.
Although not real wood, the style blends into homes well, making them a valuable addition to home decor. Even so, customers have picked out that the smallest cuts and dents can show up quite easily.
Before purchasing, know that the manufacturer recommends you only dry-clean them. Sure, this is a bit of a pain, but itâs countered by how easy they are to disassemble and reassemble.
Something to mitigate this slight hindrance is that theyâre water-resistant, so itâs simple to wipe away surface liquids.
Pros:
- High-quality wood effect
- Soft and cushioning
- Insulating and sound-absorbing
- Excellent assembly
Cons:
- Shows marks easily
- Dry clean only
- 12 TILES COVER 48 SQ. FT: Include 12 tiles. Each tile measures 24âL x 24âW x 7/16âthick â Thick from the highest point of the texture
12. IncStores â -Inch-Thick Practice Dance Floor Tiles (decent home gym wood flooring)
Whatâs good enough for a dance floor is good enough for home gym flooring, right?
RIGHT!
Thereâs no major reason why you canât use these tiles as your home gym hardwood flooring. Just be warned that they might not be as well-suited to dropping weights on as the foam and rubber options above.
With this in mind, maybe consider them as your home gymnasium flooringâideal for calisthenics or gymnastic work. Theyâre made from hard-wearing polypropylene coupled with a wood vinyl top layer, so will provide some durability.
While they might lack a bit of spring, customers rave about how easy these tiles are to install, clipping together with ease and providing limitless coverage.
In addition, the 6 different styles mean excellent customization to suit your home decor:
- Barnwood
- Beachwood
- Oak
- Black
- Dark maple
- White
Pros
- Catchy wood look
- Easy to install
- Excellent customization
- Provides some durability
Cons
- Not suitable for heavy weights
- Lacks the cushioning of foam and rubber
- INSPIRE YOUR IMPROVEMENT: Envision the ultimate dance studio with a printed tap floor thats engineered for greatness. With effortless installation and balanced glide, our ballet floor tiles are the perfect partner for almost every style of dance.
13. Sorbus Interlocking Grass Tiles (best flooring for free weights outside)
These grass tiles ooze comfort and cushioning while providing a decent artificial grass look, making them an excellent option for outdoor use.
This is especially the case since customers rave about how they donât attract mold in high-humidity environments.
You arenât restricted to using them outdoors, either. Theyâre simple to customize and fit any indoor space. This is thanks to any tile being usable as a center, border, or corner piece.
The result is a seamless look, with a 12-pack covering approximately 48 square feet, which is definitely sizable and should suit your home gym needs.
Customers love the balance between comfort and durability that these provide, making them excellent for high foot traffic areas, dropping the bar, and your HIIT workouts.
One thing to be aware of is that customers mention their tiles coming with loose âgrassâ shavings. This doesnât seem to be a big deal, thoughâthey simply hoovered them up.
Pros
- Waterproof and doesnât attract mold
- Good balance between durability and comfort
- Easy to maintain
- Good size coverage
Cons
- Product can come with loose blades
- GRASS FLOOR MAT (12 TILES, 48 Sq ft) â Provides comfort and cushion to hard surfaces with artificial turf that looks like real grass â Includes 6 interlocking grass tile pieces, suitable for your indoor/outdoor space
14. Nisorpa Heavy Duty Carpet Squares
If youâre adamant about getting carpet tiles for your home gym flooring, this is worth a look. Its main intention is as commercial flooring, so itâs well-suited for high-foot-traffic areas (and also as gym flooring).
While it might not provide as good cushioning as the foam options above, it does offer some cushioning between you and your home flooring and has excellent durability.
Itâs also a high-quality option being made of 100% polypropylene, which also makes it heavy-duty and a kid and pet-friendly option.
Customers specifically mention how easy it is to trim to customize the fit and also how easy it is to clean; again, making it a good option as carpet home gym flooring.
Something to keep in mind is that the tiles are quite thin, so itâs not the best option for lots of movement, making it a good choice for free weights rather than any form of HIIT.
Pros
- Good for high-traffic areas
- Child and pet-friendly
- 100% polypropylene
- Easy to trim
Cons
- Tiles are thin compared to other options
- ăPackage includedă20pcs Carpet Floor Tiles, each Carpet Tile is 50X50CM/20x20
15. G-Floor 8â6âłx22ⲠLevant Garage Floor Mat (best gym flooring for garage)
If youâre on the hunt for garage gym flooring, this is a great option. Simply roll it out, trim it to fit your garage, and youâre ready to get working out.
Customers particularly love how easy it is to custom-fit their space, which is largely due to it being one layer and not too thick. This layering also means you wonât get pieces breaking off.
While this thickness could reduce bounce and protection, it doesnât due to being a spongy PVC. This also makes it well-suited to concrete and wood surfaces, especially since itâs also anti-slip. Rigorous workouts wonât be an issue with this vinyl flooring for home gym.
In addition, itâs waterproof, so if youâre like me and develop an inability to drink water properly when exercising, it wonât absorb liquids and damage the mat.
Additionally, itâs really simple to clean. Youâll just need your regular home all-purpose cleaner and some warm water to clean it down. Thereâs no need to worry about spilling any chemicals on it either since itâs resistant to oils, acids, and other home chemicals.
For those of you in sunnier climates, try to not expose it to the sun for too long. It can curl at the sides if left in direct sunlight, making it tougher to fit in the garage.
Pros
- Perfect for your garage gym
- Waterproof
- Easy to clean
- Great to lay on concrete or wood
- Easy to customize the fit

16. Formica Laminate Sheets (gym laminate flooring option)
If youâre dead set on laminate flooring for a home gym, this is the one to go for.
Aside from going for solid wood flooring, this range of laminate flooring from Formica is high-quality and comes in 31 different styles, ranging from prestige walnut to flint to granite styles.
While I still donât recommend you choose laminate flooring for a home gym, this option is durable and scratch-resistant.
The caveat here is that it only has these resistance properties if youâre using it for yoga or pilates. Go for a rubber or EVA foam option above if youâre wanting to drop your kettlebells and weights.
Even so, this gym laminate flooring is very easy to clean, as youâd expect. Simply use your favorite cleaner and a cloth to wipe up your sweat, blood, and tears(!)
If you need to custom-fit your flooring at home, itâs not as easy to customize this laminate flooring as the other options. Youâll need a dedicated kit, like the REXBETI laminate installation kit.
- Buy with confidence directly from Formica, the manufacturer.

And there you have it⌠all options covered for the best flooring for a workout room at home.
So, now you have to decide which one to go for. For me, itâs always a toss-up between EVA foam and rubber.
If you want pure comfort, go for EVA foam and the BalanceFrom EVA Foam Interlocking Tiles. Iâve found it to be the most cushioned gym flooring.
If you want maximum durability, go for rubber and the IncStores Thick Premium Rubber Floor Mat.
While any of the best home gym floor mats and materials Iâve covered will suit certain situations, Iâve found the two above to be the best options.
No matter your gym home flooring choice, I really hope you enjoy your workouts at home!
Best flooring for gym FAQs
Can you put a home gym on carpet?
Yes, you can put a home gym on carpet but I recommend you upgrade and use workout room flooring over the carpet. While a thick pile carpet provides cushioning, it will deteriorate quickly, and so will the underlay. Instead, go for rubber or foam to provide more stability and durability.
What is the best thickness for gym flooring?
How thick home gym flooring is should depend on whether youâre powerlifting, using lighter dumbbells, or doing something less weight-intensive, such as yoga or HIIT. I recommend you go for at least a ½-inch gym flooring but move up to 1-inch-thickness so you can drop the bar without worry.
What do I put under my gym floor?
You donât need to put anything under your gym floor, as long as you buy high-quality gym flooring. They should provide enough protection between you and your original flooring. However, you can buy rubber horse stall mats to add an extra layer of cushioning and protection.
